Welcome. I’m John Engle.
I’m co-director and co-founder of Haiti Partners and a lifelong learner. For more than 40 years, I’ve been living into questions like: Why am I here? What is life asking of me?
I don’t pretend to have tidy answers, only a commitment to keep learning. This space is an invitation to reflect, explore, and connect because I believe our moment is now.
With my wife Merline and me with friends at Haiti Partners Annual Student Benefit in San Francisco.
About
Leaning In: A work in progress…
We are facing existential challenges. Climate. Technology. Inequality. Violence. Disconnection.
This is not a time for spectators.
It is a time to reflect deeply on who we are, how we live, and what responsibility our lives are asking of us. The work I share here grows out of a conviction that clarity, courage, and care for one another are not luxuries, but necessities for this moment.
If you’re on this site reading these words, your access to resources is likely greater than that of more than five billion people worldwide. Merline and I both grew up hearing the saying, “To those who have received much, much is expected.” That conviction continues to shape how we try to live.
I’m continuing to explore what it means to live into that responsibility through my work, my writing, and my current training as a life coach. I’m especially drawn to serving those seeking clarity around purpose and legacy.
Alongside this work, I will continue to serve as co-director of Haiti Partners, pursuing the vision of helping Haitians change Haiti through education.
I’m deeply indebted to all who are part of our lives. Merline and I are profoundly grateful to all who have invested in the education of students in Haiti. Thank you for inspiring hope through your support, trust, and encouragement.
The Book I’m working on:
Our Moment Is Now
From Hershey to Haiti: Life, Legacy, and Leadership in a World at a Crossroads
Many of us achieve success, yet sense that life is asking something more of us.
Our Moment Is Now is a teaching memoir about clarity, courage, and calling. Drawing from a life journey that spans Hershey, Pennsylvania, to decades of work in Haiti, it explores what it means to grow our WHY, individually and collectively, to resist the abuse of power, and to live in ways that honor dignity, solidarity, and future generations.
This is a book for those who are conscious of their mortality and want to live with greater intention. It invites readers to reflect deeply, act courageously, and respond to life’s call at a moment when the world needs us to do so together.
Coaching & Conversations
Through one-on-one conversations, I work with people who feel called to gain clarity around purpose, vocation, and the legacy they wish to nurture. This is not about quick fixes or tidy answers, but about creating space for honest reflection, courageous choices, and meaningful next steps.

Would you like to explore how I work with people who feel a quiet nudge toward something deeper?
Perhaps you’ve achieved success, yet sense that life is inviting you to something more meaningful, courageous, or enduring. If so, I invite you to schedule an exploratory conversation with me. You can do so by completing the form below or by clicking the “Book an Appointment” button above.
Or maybe you’re reaching out with ideas about how we might work together to grow our collective capacity to do good, whether in the U.S., in Haiti, or elsewhere. If that’s the case, please share a bit about what you have in mind, and we’ll be in touch soon.
I look forward to hearing from you.
